Play Time center> Sand Sculptures 3 cups sand 1 1/2 cups cornstarch 1 1/2 cups water Combine ingredients in medium sauce pan and cook over low heat until thickened. Allow to cool and use immediately. After sculptures are created, allow to dry for several days. Sculptures may then be painted with tempera paints. Glop What you will need: Cookie Sheet (with rim around the edge) Corn Starch Water Pour about one cup of cornstarch in center of cookie sheet. Drizzle a small amount of water over it while your child (or children) stir with their fingers. After the water has been well combined into the cornstarch, the glop should look liquidy but feel stiff. Scoop some up in your hands and roll it around. It should form a semi-solid ball. What happens when you stop moving it??? It "becomes" liquid and drips through your fingers. This is a very messy project but extremely easy to clean up. Hands rinse clean under water. Allow Glop to dry on clothing and just dust off. To store Glop, allow it to dry completely. Scrape dry powder into a container and reuse just as before. To dispose of Glop, scrape into trash then wash pan as usual. Do not scrape glop into sink. Quick Play Dough What you will need: 2 cups flour 1 cup salt 1 cup water Food coloring Combine flour and salt in medium bowl. In liquid measuring cup, dissolve color of choice in water, then pour into flour mixture. Knead together until dough forms. This dough will only keep for a few days but it is quick and easy to make. Play Dough What you will need: 1 cup flour 1 T oil 1 cup water 1/2 cup salt 2 t cream of tartar Food coloring Pour all the dry ingredients in a saucepan. Stir in wet ingredients. Cook over medium-low heat, stirring constantly, until ball forms. (About five minutes or less). Cool slightly, knead until smooth. Store in sealable plastic containers or refrigerate. This type of play dough will keep for several weeks. More about play dough: Keep mess to a minimum by placing a vinyl tablecloth on the floor. Toddlers work better at ground level than at the table and it also keep play dough from being scattered quite so far. Clean all utensils after use. Seal up remaining play dough, making sure to discard any dried pieces. Take tablecloth outside and shake off any excess. Fold and store for next time! Check out our edible playdough on the snacktime page: Peanut Butter Balls! Bubbles, Bubbles! 6 cups water 2 cups liquid detergent 3/4 cup light corn syrup Carefully mix everything together in a large bowl (do not allow the mixture to foam or it will not produce nice bubbles!!). Transfer to a gallon size container for storage and dispense in smaller bottles or use the wide mouth of the bowl to allow for large size bubble rings, spatulas and spoons. Cinnamon Ornaments Note: These are *NOT* edible! 16 ounce jar of unsweetened applesauce 8 ounce jar of cinnamon 1 t of nutmeg Mix everything together and refrigerate, uncovered until excess moisture evaporates. Roll out to 1/4" thickness and cut into desired shapes. Use a straw to cut holes at the top of the figures. Leave on tray or cookie sheet to dry (2 or more days). Run ribbon or yarn through the holes and hang. | ||
